Cake in a Mug, Yeah Right

Cake in a mug looks like this delicious dessert you can make in a matter of minutes. I wanted cake yesterday and Nana Helen was decorating for Halloween, so she was not available to make one. I had an old recipe I found for cake in a mug so I decided to give it a go, I mean how hard it could be. In case you haven’t noticed, I am not exactly a kitchen goddess. I can cook and make it edible but baking is something I still haven’t mastered. I am more of a “look at the pretty pictures” baker.

So I assembled my ingredients for my cake in a mug. I do not remember where I got this recipe but here it is if you would like to have it:

Cake in a Mug

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp. flour
  • 4 tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tbsp. of whisked egg
  • 3 tbsp. of milk
  • 3 tbsp. of oil
  • 3 tbsp. of chocolate chips
  • 2 caramel squares cut up

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients and then add your wet ingredients. Mix well, and then add your chocolate chips and caramel pieces. Microwave 3 minutes. It may raise over the mug, this is fine. It will deflate when it cools.

Sounds easy, right?

So I assembled my dry ingredients with my wet ingredients, stirred well:

Then I added my chocolate chips and caramel pieces. So far so good:

I popped it in the microwave for 3 minutes and….. I burn it to a crisp. I am not lying, it was burnt. I am talking microwave smoking, smell so bad that you had to turn a fan on burnt.

You can see the burnt part ( it is kind of light brown in the picture). I honestly was devastated because I couldn’t even make a cake in  a mug. However, I was not down for the count. I decided to do it again and only nuked it for two minutes. This one came out a little better ( the glob of caramel was from where I tried to make a caramel topping. Nana Helen informed me you were supposed to add a few drops of water to the caramels before melting, sigh.)

The sad thing is this is how it came out. One big blob on the plate. It looks nothing like this:

Somewhere, Martha Stewart is drinking her 5000 dollar a bottle wine, 10,000 dollar an ounce truffles, and is laughing at me.

Have you ever tried cake in a mug? If so, how did yours turn out?
