I will have to admit that screening Disneynature “Bears” was not exactly the most thrilling thing about my trip to LA. I love animals but nature films kind of remind me of those dorky assemblies we had as a kid. We would all gather in the auditorium or gym and sit in those uncomfortable chairs while a video played about some animal that most likely would end up dead in the end. Not exactly my idea of fun to be honest but I was in for a surprise though because I ended up totally loving the film. This was my first Disneynature film and I am definitely going to be getting the rest of them. I was pretty excited to do this Disneynature Bears Review and I hope you are excited about meeting the cubs!
The film introduces us to Sky, the mother of two cubs, Amber and Scout. I think what hit me the most about this movie was the fact it was about a Mom who would do anything it took to take care of her cubs. She would brave danger, predators, the weather, etc to get what she needed to take care of her cubs. In one word it was about survival. I can relate to that because as a single Mom, struggling most of the time, I know all about the things you would do to take care of your kids. Also, Sky was like me, she had one child that was easy going and did what she was told. She had another one that got into mischief, was insanely curious, and sometimes his curiosity got the better of him. It was like it was me, in bear form!
One thing I haven’t talked about on the blog but realized when I went to LA is how much work goes into Disney films. I already knew they must be a lot of work but seeing the creative process in person was an eye opener. I can’t imagine the work that went into this film. First of all the film is gorgeous. It was filmed in Alaska and wow, I really have to go there one day. Secondly, the animals were right there, up close and personal. I can’t imagine all the work that went into getting that footage. Then when they got all that footage these people cut, edited and narrated it. John C. Reilly does the narration and he does an amazing job. It really shows how much talent and creativity is in the world.
And just to show you how dedicated they were to getting the footage for the film here is a pic of how close they got to the animals. These animals are not actors folks, they are wild animals. This took some serious courage and bravery. I would have wet my pants.
My friends that have younger children were worried about the bear fights, whether they were overly scary. I can assure you they weren’t. Things got tense but there wasn’t blood or full out bear war. I really didn’t see anything that a child 6 years and older would be afraid of. I know some of the classes in the school system are going to see the movie as a field trip and I think that is wonderful. Disneynature has made sure teachers ( and home educators like me ) have the materials they need to teach the kids all about the brown bears. You can download the educator packet HERE.
Bears opens in theaters today, April 18th, in honor of Earth Day. If you see the film opening week ( April 18-24), Disneynature will make a donation to the National Park Foundation through the Disney Worldwide Conservation fund to protect wildlife and wild places. How cool is that? You get to see an amazing film and our National Parks receive the money they need to keep the animals safe!
If you want to contribute even more you can check out these stylish and amazing cases by DODOcase. DODOcase introduces a limited edition collection of iPad Air, iPad Mini and iPhone 5/5S cases featuring a custom BEARS design. 20% of each sale will go directly to the National Park Foundation. Visit DODOcase to purchase and learn more.
Money is tight, I get that. Boy, do I really get that. Movies can be expensive and Bears is nowhere as exciting as say, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But, I really, really think if you can swing it, this is the movie to see this weekend. Not only will your ticket purchase help the National Park Foundation but your child will get a better understanding of Bears and wildlife. Our children need to know the importance of preserving these animals. Understanding today makes sure that the animals are still here tomorrow.
