We bought an awesome smoker from QVC last year and we are breaking it out this Memorial weekend! You know what that means, right? Yep, I have been scouring the internet trying to find amazing recipes for a smoker grill. All week I have been dreaming of Smoked Bourbon ribs, Mac-n-Cheese and even fruit! It is going to be an amazing weekend for sure! Good food, family and amazing memories! Of course I couldn’t forget dessert and added some Memorial Day Desserts!
Using a smoker can sometimes be a complicated but very rewarding experience. If you do it right you are treated to some of the best meat in the world. So tender it falls off the bone and it has a woodsy flavor that you just can’t get from grilling alone, no matter what fancy wood chips you use. I have compiled a few tips for you when using your smoker grill and if you follow them you will be eating gloriously in no time!
- Make sure your wood burns at an even temperature. You want it slow and low for that fall off the bone piece of meat.
- Make sure your wood is heated thoroughly before adding your meat. Then you want to keep a constant eye on it and adjust the dampers and hues as needed. The temperature should remain at a constant 180 degrees to 200 degrees.
- Keep a meat thermometer on hand and check your meat for doneness. This not only insures your meat is cooked thoroughly but also not over done. Because a steak that is over cooked is a travesty indeed!
- Use tongs when cooking meat, checking/adding wood or adjusting vents. Oven mitts are perfect for refilling the water tray. Remember, safety always comes first. Nobody wants to end a BBQ to take someone to the hospital for serious burns.
- While you do need to check your temperature, etc, try to do it as limited as you can. Every time you open your smoker you lose heat and then you have to wait for it to go back up. So only check it when necessary.
- Never use your smoker in doors or where it is not heavily ventilated. Wood/Charcoal fumes can be toxic. Again, safety first!
You should also read your manual for extra safety. Practice makes perfect and once you have it down, you will be the hero of your family! Especially with some of the recipes in this post. Don’t own a smoker? If you or someone you know is handy at building things, you can build your own backyard smoker.
