I have been doing car reviews the last few months and you may be wondering “Why is a foodie, tech and crafter so interested in cars lately?” Well for one, it is really fun to have a new car to drive around! Number 2, Roxy is turning 16 in 3 days and will be getting her license soon, so we are in search of the perfect vehicle. Thirdly, our conversion van is almost dead and we need a new family car. So, we have been doing a lot of test driving and we really love it. I mean LOVE IT!
You may remember that I told you all about the Kia Sorento and how we loved it and it was so perfectly awesome! That car really stayed on our mind, well until we drove the 2014 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring AWD. Let’s just say, I fell in love. I have never met a car I love as much as this one. Well accept my moms 2012 yellow Camaro but that is another story. First off it seats 7. Which we need because we have a lot of people. So there was plenty of room in this car and I could have fit a couple more in the trunk if I really wanted too.
The third row also folded down, giving you even more room in the back. Which is great for Christmas shopping. We took this bad boy everywhere during Christmas and was able to stuff all the goodies in there.
There were so many features I loved that I honestly don’t know where to begin. The driver side and passenger side has heated/cooling seats. Which we affectionately referred to as “butt warmers”. It had a full navigation system as well blue tooth sync. It also had USB ports so I could charge up my phone or the girls iPods. And let me just say, they was a real life saver a couple of times. During the Christmas rush I forgot to charge up a couple of things and it was great to be able to do it in the car. There were the usual things like cup holders, etc but one thing that really caught my eye was the little tray table in the second row. It had two cup holders and a place to set your food/snacks etc. It was perfect for the the girls. In addition to being able to set their snacks there they were also able to lay their phones/iPods down.
The seats were very comfortable, stylish and plush. I think plush is a weird word to describe seats but it fits. When you sat down you felt at home. I also loved how the passenger seat had powered seats. I was like a kid again trying all the settings. Also, there was plenty of leg room. This was really good for my Mom who has knee and joint problems. She was able to get comfortable and not hurt like she sometimes does in the car.
Can we talk about engines for a second? I really don’t know a lot about them. Just that they make the car go ( well you need gas, but you know what I mean) and if you don’t take care of them they blow up and then you have to buy a new one, which gets really expensive, yada yada yada. I was always under the impression that they pretty much look the same, even though I referred to the Kia’s as sexy. But if the Kia was sexy, this one is supermodel sexy. When we popped the hood I honestly said “Whoa”. The Mazda CX-9 has a 3.7L DOHC 24-valve V6 with VVT. I have NO clue what that means but I can tell you it is enough to make me say “Whoa”. Also, I can tell you while driving that engine purred like a kitten and responded to every change fluidly. It must be pretty awesome because my Dad got all excited and started checking everything out like a kid under the tree at Christmas. ( W really are normal people I swear. We just really love our toys.)
Before I get to some of the AWESOME specs on this car ( and before your eyes glaze over from so much reading), I really want to talk about the gas mileage. The estimated fuel mileage is 16/22 MPG. What I can tell you is that we had this car around Christmas and we did multiple trips in a day. We were still Christmas shopping, grocery shopping, etc and some of the stores we went to were over 30 minutes away. After Christmas we rode it everywhere hitting all the after Christmas sales and parties. In the two weeks of having it and taking it everywhere we went, we still did not use a tank of gas. This car was great on gas!
