Big Confession!! I hate peanut butter and jelly. Not the combination, but rather the actual sandwich. Something about the thick peanut butter with the fruity jelly between two slices of white bread turns me off. However, I love the combination so when I want a peanut butter and jelly fix, I do it another way.
Today is national Peanut Butter and Jelly day! No one is quite sure how this day began but most people are in agreement that this combination should be celebrated! Even though this days origins is up in the air, we definitely know when the sandwich was first introduced. In 1940 Peanut Butter and Jelly became part of the military’s rations. While it started out as a simple meal for our soldiers it quickly became America’s favorite lunch, especially for kids. There are several different types of peanut butters on the market today but the best seller still remains Jif with Skippy becoming a close second.
Due to the health craze, introduction of gluten free, and allergies, peanut butter has done some serious involving in the past 20 years. When you visit your grocery now you can find several different kinds of peanut butter, including:
- Natural
- Flavored Peanut Butter, such as Mocha Jif or Berry Flavored
- Different nut butters, such as cashew butter, pecan butter, or almond butter.
- Sugar Free
- Organic
- Even Peanut Butter with Jelly already in the jar- (Goober)
Of course what would a peanut butter sandwich be complete without it’s counterpart, jelly? Welch’s was started in 1923 and the first flavor introduced was concord grape. That is still one of the top flavors, followed closely by strawberry.
We couldn’t have this national day without some recipes! So I hunted up some of my favorites for you!
